Abigail Puts Royal Mail in the Picture3.34.10pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 18th Apr 2008
Abigail Lock, the London Assembly candidate for Croydon and Sutton, has visited one of Croydon's threatened Post Offices, where she launched her 'Putting Royal Mail in the Picture' campaign. This is part of Croydon Lib Dems' on-going fight to save local Post Offices. Following thousands of Post Office closures over recent years, Gordon Brown's Labour government now say that a further 2,500 are to close. Alongside a petition against these closures, Abigail is asking Post Office customers to send her pictures of queues at their Post Office. Pictures received will be used to show Royal Mail that there is a high demand for Croydon's Post Offices. "The Liberal Democrats believe that local Post Offices provide a vital community service and that the Government should do everything it can to stop this latest wave of closures," said Abigail. "Customers already face long queues and more closures will mean longer waiting times." Local Lib Dems are also circulating a petition. Once collected, the petitions will be sent to the Lib Dems' candidate for Mayor, Brian Paddick, to then be presented to Downing Street. Abigail was joned by Danny Alexander MP, Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, who said: "Many people rely on their local Post Office and to close so many in Croydon shows a complete disregard for the needs of the local community." Participants are asked to check that people are happy to be photographed and email pictures to: abigaillock@croydonlibdems.org.uk.
