Nick is Making It Happen

11.57.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Fri 19th Sep 2008

Nick Clegg, leader of the Liberal Democrats

In his first speech as Leader to the Lib Dems' autumn conference, Nick Clegg captured the imagination of the hall in Bournemouth and a millions of viewers beyond.

Announcing his Make It Happen campaign, Nick declared:"This party is the only choice for anyone who wants a fairer Britain." Making it clear that politics has changed forever, he said: "Labour is finished, it's over," and that "The Conservatives are a say everything, do nothing party" and commenting on their arrogance asserted that "power must be earned, not inherited."

The Lib Dems have a radical package of proposals, including tax cuts for the low and middle-income tax-payers, a cut of 4p in the basic rate of tax, a commitment to green power - without nuclear power and support for children.

It's a message which is going down very well with the public, as shown by a remarkable response from a cross-section of the public on BBC's Newsnight.
