Nick is Making It Happen11.57.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Fri 19th Sep 2008
In his first speech as Leader to the Lib Dems' autumn conference, Nick Clegg captured the imagination of the hall in Bournemouth and a millions of viewers beyond. Announcing his Make It Happen campaign, Nick declared:"This party is the only choice for anyone who wants a fairer Britain." Making it clear that politics has changed forever, he said: "Labour is finished, it's over," and that "The Conservatives are a say everything, do nothing party" and commenting on their arrogance asserted that "power must be earned, not inherited." The Lib Dems have a radical package of proposals, including tax cuts for the low and middle-income tax-payers, a cut of 4p in the basic rate of tax, a commitment to green power - without nuclear power and support for children. It's a message which is going down very well with the public, as shown by a remarkable response from a cross-section of the public on BBC's Newsnight.
